2020 Concert Cancellations and Updates

Fiddle and Bow Family,

I write this note to update you on Fiddle & Bow and our current schedule of events. We have decided to cancel all shows in 2020 to reduce the possibility of placing our artists, audience and ourselves at risk and to start planning for the 2021 concert season.

This past year has seen some real accomplishments for Fiddle & Bow. We are now bringing shows to Greensboro, located a new venue in Winston-Salem due to changes at Muddy Creek, being co-sponsors at the North Carolina Folk Festival and Greensboro’s Arts in the Arboretum, and our booking committee, led by Peg Parham, have brought in more sold out shows than in recent years. Then came COVID-19, group safety concerns, and the NC State restrictions that put us, along with everyone else, on hold.

Our decision to cancel the remainder of our concert series this year was based on several factors: The inability to plan with artists with the uncertain Governor’s phased roll out schedule, the initial limitation of attendance to 30 or so; the necessary distancing of attendees at the show, the increased risk (perceived and actual) to all attending a show, and the financial shortfall of a sparsely attended event. Given our current stable financial footing and low operating expenses, we felt it best to wait for a time we can schedule and promote live events that will bring back artists and audiences to our shows.

Between now and then we will again be partnering with the North Carolina Folk Festival and Arts in the Arboretum. On our Facebook page we are regularly posting live stream events of artists who have graced our stages in recent years. Please check these out regularly and support these artists.

As a volunteer organization and a community of folk music lovers, we are open to all of you to make Fiddle & Bow a meaningful contributor to live music in the Triad region. We expect that this will be a brave new world for live performance and to be completely honest, we do not even know the questions, let alone have the answers.

If you have a skill set or ideas of what the future of Fiddle & Bow should look like, please reach out to us. We will be reaching out to you as well. As we are learning, community may be one of the most important assets we can nurture and we want you to be part of the volunteer community Fiddle & Bow is proud to support.

Pint and Dale House Concert – Live From the Mermaid’s Tavern on Thursday, May 14th @ 6:30 ET

The event starts with a virtual open mic session which you can participate in if you CONTACT Lynn Noel for a Zoom invitation and link.

Lynn Noel is based in Massachusetts, so the timing might be a wee bit tricky for some of our far flung friends:

Here on the west coast of the US — things start at 4:30PM

For night owls on the other side of the pond, it will begin at 12:30 AM
in the UK and an hour later on the continent of Europe.

We hope you can either participate in this virtual community event or drop in after the fact to enjoy the concert!

Sunday Brunch with Hanz & Colleen Sunday, May 3rd at 11:30am EDT

Hello!

Well last Sunday was a challenge wasn’t it? At 11:28am, right on cue, our internet modem and router just gave up the ghost and a couple hundred people around the world who had planned to join us online were left with a 3 minute video of the two of us trying to figure out why my computer kept saying “unstable connection” instead of the concert you were promised. Some of you know this already, but we live on a farm in a pretty rural area in Maine and when our internet is out, so is our cellular service so we were plain out of ways to broadcast from home. We finally ventured out with a couple of folding chairs to a remote spot next to the Mousam River and did our level best to play some music for those stalwarts who hung in with us.

This week will be much less dramatic, with any luck. New router, much more stable connection (ehem), and an hour of music to start your Sunday. For those on the west coast, we’ll leave the concert on the website until the end of the day so you don’t have to hurry out of bed. Just catch us when you’re up and have your coffee. Or brunch cocktail.

Speaking of cocktails! A wonderful friend in Sammamish, Washington asked if I had any recommendations for cocktails for our brunch concerts in light of my monthly cocktail recommendations from a few years ago. So why not! An Aperol spritz is unbelievably easy to make. No cocktail shaker or fancy equipment required! You’ll simply fill a wine glass with ice, then add Aperol, Prosecco, club soda and a slice of orange.

Performer Bios:
Tom Paxton is a legend in the songwriting world. He has been an integral part of the songwriting and folk music community since the early 60’s and continues to be a primary influence on today’s “New Folk” generation. Tom has received 5 Grammy nominations as well as Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Recording Academy, ASCAP and the BBC. www.TomPaxton.com

Kathy Mattea is one of the most respected female country stars of her era, a commercially successful hitmaker who was able to bring elements of folk, bluegrass, gospel, and singer/songwriter intimacy to her music. She has charted more than 30 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including four that reached No. 1. She is also a two-time Grammy Award winner. www.Mattea.com

Darrell Scott is a singer, songwriter, session musician and a four time Grammy nominated artist. He’s a multi-instrumentalist and he has toured as part of Robert Plant’s Band of Joy. Dr. Ysaye M. Barnwell toured with the internationally acclaimed singing group Sweet Honey in the Rock for more than 30 years, appearing on more than 30 recordings. She has performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center to concert halls in Africa, Europe and New Guinea. She is a vocalist with a range of over three octaves.

Grammy award-winning songwriter, Nashville based, Jon Vezner is a tunesmith of rare sensitivity and dry wit. His catalogue of recorded songs, topped by the poignant “Where’ve You Been,” reflects his straight-to-the heart sensibility and emotional awareness. He’s had songs recorded by Martina McBride, Janis Ian, John Mellencamp, Nancy Griffith, Faith Hill, Clay Walker, and Diamond Rio among others. www.JonVezner.com

John McCutcheon a folk music singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has produced 40 albums since the 1970s. He is regarded as a master of the hammered dulcimer, and is also proficient on many other instruments including guitar, banjo, autoharp, mountain dulcimer, fiddle, and Jew’s harp. Robbie Schaefer is a musician, songwriter, and playwright devoted to service through the arts. He is the guitarist and songwriter for the indie folk band Eddie From Ohio and has released several solo albums, including his most recent, 2017′s Sounds Like Home: Songs From the Musical, Light Years.
